Census 2011 – First Release of Data
Policy Focus


The first results of the 2011 Census have been released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), shortly after being read to Parliament. The release of all census data will be staggered and this first release, covering England and Wales, looks at overall population and household counts by region, age and gender. The ONS reports to Parliament (not the Government) - personal census information is not shared with any other government department or body nationally or locally.

This book, produced from the seminar in 2009, provides an in-depth deliberation upon the now unsettled relationship between religion and politics in contemporary Britain, with some emphasis upon the case of Islam, which is now at the centre of the debate. Combining theological reflections and academic and policy perspectives, this topical collection includes contributions from Ted Cantle, Sunder Katwala, Maleiha Malik, Tariq Modood, Abdullah Sahin, Norman Solomon and Nick Spencer.

On 8th April 2010 the Equality Act 2010 was given Royal Assent creating a landmark in equalities legislation. The Government published the Equality Bill last year – the Bill was introduced in the House of Commons on Friday 24th April 2009 and published on Monday 27th April.
Prevent Inquiry

In July 2009, The Communities and Local Government Committee of the House of Commons called an inquiry into 'Prevent', the Government's programme for preventing violent extremism. The Committee set out to consider the effectiveness of the 'Prevent' programme under the scope of the CLG to date, and set out questions concerning the Government’s analysis, approach and communications regarding violent extremism.

This report records the proceedings of a series of symposia led by the Centre of Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge, along with Universities of Westminster and Exeter. Along with representation from the Policy Research Centre, the symposia brought together nearly 30 Muslim scholars, intellectuals, social scientists and activists, from a wide range of theological strands of British Islam, to debate a complex set of issues pertaining to the everyday life of British Muslims.
